Is the Price Right? An Insider’s View on Valuing Fine Art
For the first time at any art fair, the process of valuing and pricing fine art will be made transparent by art historian, publisher, and appraiser, Peter Hastings Falk. Many prospective buyers hesitate when they perceive that prices may have been plucked from the blue sky. Falk provides a clear logic to all collectors that is easy to understand and finally illuminates what has long been an opaque subject for most people.
Mr. Falk is the founder of Rediscovered Masters (known as redM), which is both an illustrated biographical encyclopedia as well as a curatorial enterprise for presenting significant artists who have, for fascinating reasons, slipped through the cracks of art history. All artists are vetted by its Art Advisory Board. Here at Art Concept, redM is presenting “The Cuatrecasas Discovery.” This exhibition serves as a perfect example of the complexities surrounding proper valuation — particularly since this artist’s estate collection was buried for 40 years and is only now being unveiled for the first time here in Miami. Falk’s principles and common sense approach appeals to all levels art collecting. And it applies to all of the art you will enjoy at the booths throughout this fair — from young emerging artists to mid and late career to deceased.
Mr. Falk is a pioneer in the publishing of art auction indices and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of ArtNet in New York. Since 2000 he has been the U.S. Editor of Artprice.com. He is author and publisher of numerous art reference books, including the national award-winning three-volume biographical dictionary, Who Was Who in American Art. As an expert appraiser he is most noted for having valued the Andy Warhol estate collection as well as Nazi-looted art.
A provocative discussion on why government, public institutions, nonprofit organizations and corporations invest in public art, and the impact public art has on communities. From works of Isamu Noguchi to Anish Kapoor, Public Art is a multifaceted field of inquiry; it encompasses a wide variety of creative expressions in the publicrealm. Presentation and open dialogue with Jorge Luis Gutierrez museologist and curator, joining the discussion are Eugenio Maslowski De Bode of the Art Museums for the Americas, public art artist and architect Carola Bravo and contemporary artist Antuan Rodriguez.
